Many of us remember the words Bob Dylan sang many years ago…
Come gather ’round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you
Is worth savin’
Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’…
It seems these words still fit today. Times are difficult for teachers across the nation. Schools close, teachers lose jobs, classroom student counts expand and the demands of classroom instruction seem to multiply daily. Though frustrated and tired, teachers manage to meet the unique needs of each student in their charge.
Do you feel swamped? Do you have time for family and friends after meeting your teaching responsibilities? Do you feel like you’re swimming or sinking like a stone?
What are your thoughts on the past school year?
Many teachers fuss about their frustrations but then sit back and do nothing, waiting for change agents to fix their school system. Why is that? Our nation’s majority is composed of passive people. All are affected, so all have responsibility. This lesson needs to be taught and it isn’t.
